Hope Works / No Bounds 2024

Resident: Rian Treanor

Rian Treanor re-imagines the intersection of club culture, experimental art and computer music, presenting an insightful and compelling musical world of fractured and interlocking components. Exploring teaching and workshops as another stand to his practice he has build a considerable body of work working with children and 65+ alike.

Rian Treanor re-imagines the intersection of club culture, experimental art and computer music, presenting an insightful and compelling musical world of fractured and interlocking components.

Having left a vivid impression in 2015 with his debut 12″ ‘A Rational Tangle’ and his scintillating 2nd EP ‘Pattern Damage’ on The Death of Rave. In 2018 the Warp sub-label Arcola relaunch with his bold Contraposition 12” single.
His hexagonal and half-stepping bleep-bass mutations rewire hyper-chromatic UK garage and pointillist footwork, with 10/10 and album of the month reviews in MixMag, and is receiving plays by Bjork in her current DJ sets. At an unrelenting 150bpm his recent guest mix for Mumdance’s RinseFM show alongside RP Boo established Treanor as both a disruptive and essential new figure in British underground club music.

He’s had live shows at GES-2 (RU), Irish Museum of Modern Art (IRL), Berghain (DE), OHM (DE), Cafe Oto (UK), Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Arts (UK), Empty Gallery (HK), Summerhall (UK) as well as taking part in artists residencies at yU+co[lab] in Hong Kong and with Counterflows in India 2016 – 2017. Nyege Nyege festival 2018 and his performance at No Bounds 2019 with Jan Hendrickse was a real highlight for us, as were his regular appearances at Hope Works as a 2019 resident.

2021 saw him develop a new collaboration with visual artist Leila Ziu which premiered at No Bounds Festival 2021.

We are excited to continue our work with Mark Fell and Rian Treanor and the development of their groundbreaking multiplayer music website intersymmetric.xyz.

After launching in 2021 as a commission from No Bounds and with new iterations for Algorithmic Art Assembly in San Francisco, Mark, Rian are now working with Nyege Nyege Festival to make a new collaborative system for No Bounds 2022.

With the support of the British Council in Uganda, the UK team are working closely with Dj Diaki and Jay Mitta from the Nyege Nyege collective, bending approaches to Balani rhythm and Singeli with generative music systems.

This project will include a series of workshops held in Kampala and Rotherham linking together young people and children in both regions. A key focus for this iteration is compatibility with mobile phones and tablets offering increased accessibility.

The project launches at No Bounds 2022 with a performance featuring groups in Rotherham and Kampala, outputting straight into the festival Sound System in real time, peak time. This brings people together forming new musical dialogues and cross-continental collaboration.

2022 looks like a big year for Rian, he has a lot of very interesting work in the pipeline. We are very happy to continue and grow our relationship with this very talented individual.
